Stuffy Bathrooms?
Some ideas to keep the mould under control
1. Houseplants
Steaming hot showers are a daily ritual, especially now that winter has set in across
much of the country. However, the resulting humidity and condensation can lead to
several unwelcome bathroom issues, such as mold, wet spots, and dry rot. The
good news is that you don't need expensive treatments, harsh chemicals, or
dehumidifiers to address excess moisture. Instead, you can turn to houseplants. Certain
plants not only revitalize your space but also help control bathroom humidity, particularly
during the winter. These plants typically absorb moisture and dew through their leaves
rather than their roots.
So, consider adding the following houseplants to your bathroom. They will help you see
yourself better in the mirror after a nice hot shower or bath.
The Bird's Nest Fern (Asplenium nidus) - this plant thrives in high humidity and
indirect sunlight, which makes it the perfect plant for a bathroom. They also filter
toxins from the air & are safe for cats or dogs.
The Sword Fern (Boston fern, Nephrolepis exaltata) - this plant obtains its
moisture from air, rain or water. Needs a little indirect sunlight but also moist soil
to thrive. Make sure the shower's condensation isn't the only moisture it gets.
The ZZ plant, aka the Zanzibar Gem (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) - This plant
needs very little natural sunlight, which makes them perfect for darker bathrooms.
Like the fern, it is ideal for combatting stuffiness. PS: This plant is poisonous to
pets!!
Mother-in-law's tongue (snake plant, Sansevieria trifasciata) - Very popular
plant, it is ideal for condensation and prefers a sunny bathroom. Acts as a natural air purifier that helps filter common household toxins. Pets should preferably not have access to it.
2. Household Cleaners
Mould thrives in moist, warm and humid conditions. Winter is the prime time for mould growth as it follows the autumn rains. Damp walls, combined with poor ventilation and indoor heating allows mould spores to grow, digesting the surfaces they grow on as they do so. Preventative actions surrounding mould include controlling moisture, increasing ventilation and acting quickly when water problems occur. If caught quickly, small areas of mould on hard surfaces can generally be cleaned easily using general affordable household cleaning products. With experience and feedback from tenants, the product, Mr Sheen Mould & Mildew Cleaner and Disinfectant, works extremely well.
3. Tenant's Responsibilities
As a tenant, you must ensure your bathroom remains mould-free.
Here are some tips to help you prevent mould and steps to take if it does appear: Preventing Mold:
• Ventilation: Always use the bathroom fan or open a window during and after showers to reduce humidity.
• Dry Surfaces: Wipe down shower walls, floors, and other wet surfaces after use.
• Fix Leaks: Report any leaks immediately, but also keep an eye out and wipe away any standing water.
- Use Mold-Resistant Products: Consider using mould-resistant shower curtains and bathmats
Addressing Mold:
1. Clean Regularly: Use a mould-killing cleaner to scrub any mould you find on tiles, grout, or other surfaces.
2. Keep it Dry: Continue to dry all surfaces and ensure good ventilation to prevent mould from returning.
3. Monitor and Maintain: Keep an eye on areas prone to mould and address any signs of it immediately.
Remember, maintaining a mould-free bathroom is your responsibility as a tenant, not the landlord's. Taking these steps will help keep your living environment healthy and comfortable.
